Wow, That Hurt More Than I Thought It Would

wpid-bafana_bafana-2010-06-17-11-15.jpgSo, if you’re proudly South African like I am, you were most likely either in Loftus Versveld or sitting in front of a telly last night. I know that before the world cup started I had little hope for Bafana Bafana and was actually quite phlegmatic about the team. Now don’t get me wrong, I am really amped about the world cup. I was really looking forward to it. I believe no matter what, we win! We win exposure to our awesome and beautiful country, we win infrastructure and we win world class stadiums (though many people will deny that’s a win).

But then that first match against Mexico. Man! What a match, it was so good seeing our team play, and I think they played well, really well.

Then last night happened, and I can only say they were outplayed totally, and yes, the ref was (insert own expletive here), and the goalie really didn’t deserve that red card, or the free kick, but they were still outplayed.

What really surprised me was my reaction. I was angry and miserable and really felt emotional about the whole deal, I swore and shouted, and I’m not a swearer or a shouter, my girlfriend was even surprised! It’s amazing how quickly we can be swept up in the emotion of the moment. It’s all a bit of “crowd psychology”. What is frightening is how quickly we can be sucked in.

I am not giving up on them, my hope burns eternal (as futile as some say that is), they are up against the Frenchies next, go give them a hiding boys, we know you can!

Ciao for now!
